Shatter Me is a young adult dystopian novel by Tahereh Mafi. The story follows Juliette, a teenage girl with a deadly touch that has caused her to be isolated and imprisoned by the government.
Although, this exact government wants to use her power.

Shatter Me Book Review

The book’s writing style is unique, with the author using a stream-of-consciousness technique and crossing out specific phrases to represent Juliette’s chaotic and fragmented thoughts. This adds depth to the character and the story, creating an engaging and distinctive reading experience.

The characters in the book are well-developed, with Juliette‘s struggles and conflicts driving the plot forward. The love interest, Adam, is also well-written, with his backstory and motivations that add to the overall depth of the story.
It’s visible within the writing style how much Juliette struggles at first. Especially with her thoughts stroke, which gets less and less towards the end.

The world-building is well done with the post-apocalyptic setting, though it mostly feels toward the book’s center when they leave.
The themes of power, control, and oppression are explored in a nuanced and thought-provoking way, adding depth and complexity to the story. After all, Juliette grows up thinking of being an outsider because of what she did to a boy when she was too young to realize her powers.

Final Thoughts

“Shatter Me” is a captivating and engaging read that blends action, romance, and thought-provoking themes into a compelling narrative. For fans of young adult dystopian fiction and those looking for a story with a unique writing style and a strong female protagonist, it’s a good choice.

I enjoyed the read, and it isn’t a huge book, but after a long while, I got to enjoy this read.
