A Discovery of Witches Season 1 TV Review

I haven’t finished the book yet but read through around half of it. And as far as I can see, the first season of the series is the perfect adaption for the book.

The characters are exactly like I remember them from the book. Matthew with his secretly behaviour, not showing much emotions. A centuries old vampire gets drawn to Diana as she opens Ashmole 782 – The Book of Life.
Diana is a witch, full of life, fighting against her own powers.
I like that both of the characters are no children anymore. They both are pretty interesting characters.

The more the story goes on, the more I remember it from the book. It’s not very often that book and series/ movie is that close. In most cases, there’re extras added, characters missing or different. There’re usually always differences.

A Discovery of Witches” is thrilling and captivating that takes you on an enchanting journey into the world of witches, vampires, and daemons. The show follows Diana Bishop (Teresa Palmer), a historian and reluctant witch who discovers a mysterious manuscript that holds the key to unlocking the secrets of her magical heritage.

As Diana embarks on a dangerous journey to unravel the mystery of the manuscript, she crosses paths with Matthew Clairmont (Matthew Goode), a centuries-old vampire and fellow academic. Despite their initial animosity towards each other, Diana and Matthew’s relationship quickly evolves into a passionate and forbidden romance that threatens to upend the delicate balance of power between the supernatural species.

The show boasts stunning cinematography, immersive world-building, and strong performances from its talented cast. Teresa Palmer and Matthew Goode have fantastic chemistry, and their portrayal of Diana and Matthew’s complex relationship is a highlight of the series.

In addition to the central romance, it also explores themes of power, prejudice, and family dynamics within the supernatural community. The supporting cast, including Alex Kingston, Owen Teale, and Lindsay Duncan, deliver strong performances and add depth to the show’s world-building.

Final Thoughts

The first season is a must-watch for fans of the fantasy genre. I enjoyed watching the series a lot. The first few episodes are entertaining and thrilling. However, from approximately the middle of the season, it starts to drag itself along. Until then, it’s definitely a beautifully crafted series that will leave viewers spellbound and eager for more.

I totally recommend it for everyone who’s a fan of this genre.
