Charmed Season 1 (1998) follows the lives of the Halliwell sisters—Prue, Piper, and Phoebe—who discover their destiny as powerful witches destined to battle evil forces. The series unfolds with spellbinding adventures, personal growth, and the challenges of navigating both the magical and ordinary realms.

I always wanted to watch Charmed and finally got to try it properly.

The inaugural Charmed Season 1 introduces viewers to the magical world of the Halliwell sisters, blending supernatural elements with familial bonds. This review will explore the enchanting world, character dynamics, and the balance between the mystical and the mundane.

Characters/Performance

The first season introduces the sisters to the magical world and their relationships, as well as going towards improving them. It’s clear how they fixed the usual problems before, and they are about to realize all three are needed.

The actresses – Shannen Doherty (as Prue), Holly Marie Combs (as Piper), and Alyssa Milano (as Phoebe) – are also getting more comfortable with their roles and one another. But each of them also has their journey and path.
There’s also Leo and some antagonists who get first introduced.

Themes and Atmosphere

The CGI and the series are both pretty old, and that’s obvious at some point. Back in the 90’s, the CGI was somewhat limited, tho. It’s still pretty capable of catching the magical elements from the characters. It doesn’t look perfect, tho.
At the same time, it’s also focused on free will because it is the predetermined destiny of the sisters being witches and the most powerful. And who’s going to like that to hear? Well, maybe most of us. But still, it’s always a better feeling to be able to control one’s destiny.

The P3 are supposed to get comfortable with their powers and fight against evil. Magic is used here; even as old as it is, it always has some part of truth. They’re not allowed to use their powers for their benefit.

Pros:

  • Sisterly Dynamics: The series’ heart lies in the relationships between the Halliwell sisters. The dynamic between Prue, Piper, and Phoebe adds depth to the narrative and resonates with viewers.
  • Introduction to Magic: The first season introduces viewers to the magical world, its rules, and the sisters’ challenges as they embrace their newfound powers.
  • Supernatural Villains: The show presents a variety of supernatural threats that keep the storyline engaging, with a mix of episodic and overarching plots.

Cons:

  • Early CGI Limitations: Given its 1998 release, the first season’s use of early CGI may appear dated to modern viewers. However, the practical effects and storytelling compensate for any visual shortcomings.
  • Initial Character Adjustments: As with many TV series, characters undergo development, and some adjustments are made to their personalities as the season progresses.

Conclusion

Charmed Season 1 sets the stage for a magical journey filled with sisterly bonds, mystical adventures, and the timeless battle between good and evil. The series captures the essence of ’90s supernatural television while laying the foundation for a beloved long-running show.

Besides the enjoyment of watching the episodes, from time to time, I had a feeling that one season had too many episodes. It feels a bit dragged out, but that can also be me.

Recommendation

This season is recommended for fans of supernatural dramas, especially those who appreciate strong character dynamics and a mix of episodic and serialized storytelling. Charmed Season 1 remains a nostalgic gem for enthusiasts of magical TV series.
The audience must deal with three powerful female characters in this series. Similar TV shows are Shadow Hunters, A Discovery of Witches, and Ghost Whisperer.

Rating

Out of 10, I give it 8.

It has an excellent performance, the story, and the conclusion of the first season’s story.

Final Thoughts

Charmed enchants audiences in this first season with its magical premise, sisterly connections, and a perfect blend of the supernatural and the human experience. While it embraces the charm of ’90s television, its themes and characters continue to resonate, making it a delightful entry into the magical realm of the Halliwell sisters.

Besides its age, I enjoyed the first season a lot, and I think it’s an excellent show to spend some time with. Their problems are perfectly relatable for people in their mid-twenties.
