Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance Game Review (Platinum Games, SteamDeck) New

Game Review about Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance by PlatinumGames and Hideo Kojima. A stealth based action game with hack and slash elements which got first released for the PlayStation consoles. It’s a standalone spin-off featuring the cyborg Raiden, four years after the events of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots.

Why Did I choose Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance?

I had played one title from the Metal Gear series before, and while it was older, I still consider it a gold standard in its genre. The combination of a familiar universe, compelling narrative coverage, and my own curiosity drew me into Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance.

The Basics

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance is a spin-off title within the expansive Metal Gear franchise. It stars Raiden—a half-human, half-cyborg warrior—who begins his journey protecting the U.S. President, only to witness a massacre that sets him on a path of vengeance against those responsible.

What Worked

Characters: Raiden as the protagonist was fantastic, supported by an equally impressive cast of allies and adversaries. I haven’t played the earlier games where both Snake and Raiden appear together, so some of Raiden’s deeper lore remained unfamiliar to me—but the sequel (which I truly hope for) could explore that further. Either way, I see potential here.

Gameplay: The challenge felt fair yet engaging. Even on “Normal,” I felt like I was playing at what most games would consider “Hard” difficulty. “Easy” mode presented challenges too, particularly in certain moments.
However, mostly because I knew from the earlier Metal Gear game that it can be quite challenging, so I decided to stick with it either way and without guides.

All the battles were engagening. Some felt easier to be done, than others, e.g. Monsoon was one of them but I loved the character and just went with it.
The final battle deserves a mention—it stood out because each encounter started differently, preventing the predictable patterns I’m accustomed to in similar titles. So, enemy behaviour couldn’t simply be memorized and I had to improvice and test the waters so to say. There was a particular segment where I struggled for quite some time, but finally overcoming it brought immense satisfaction.

Graphics & Visuals: The scenery throughout the game was stunning. I loved exploring every environment and capturing screenshots to preserve the experience. I regret missing some spots, but the shots I did manage will definitely go into my collection.
The overall humor woven throughout the game was perfect. It added charm without undermining the serious moments.

Sound Design & Music: The OST is phenomenal—I was completely engaged through battles, sceneries, and emotional moments alike. The music carried me through every experience and elevated the game to another level entirely.

Final Thoughs

I. Love. This. Game. Give me more Raiden and Jack material!
