Dire Bound is the first book out of The Wolves of Ruin series by Sable Sorensen. As far as I know, it’s planned to be a trilogy with the third and last book not yet released.
Why I Chose This Book
I found Dire bound interesting because it’s not told in the traditional werewolf or shapeshifting vein. Instead, it explores the bond between humans and wolf companions—similar to how Fourth Wing pairs riders with dragons. That premise alone grabbed my attention and made me pick up the first book in the series.
The Basics
Meryn Cooper has never dreamed of being one of the Bonded, the King’s elite warriors who form mental links with massive, vicious direwolves. She’s made peace with her life scraping by in poverty in the shadows of the castle. But then her younger sister Saela is kidnapped, stolen across the border by the immortal monsters her country has spent centuries fighting.
And Meryn’s world falls apart.
Desperate to cross the front and save her sister, Meryn enlists in the army—only to discover that there are Bonding Trials this year, where all soldiers are forced to risk their lives in an attempt to connect with a direwolf. It’s too late to turn back; Meryn is thrown into the deadly competition against her will.
Now, she’ll need to survive the next four months of training at the castle if she wants a chance of finding Saela. Everything here is a test, from the brutal classes where one mistake means death, to the glittering court parties where every smile hides a knife.
To make things worse, Meryn is bound to a feral direwolf who refuses to communicate. The other trainees would love to spill her common blood. And her gorgeous instructor, Stark Therion, is as malicious as the wolves himself.
Everyone is out to get her—everyone but the dangerously handsome crown prince, Killian Valtiere. But if she loses her heart to him, she may also lose her life.
And the castle is hiding dark secrets…
What Worked
Storyline & Action: I loved how the plot unfolded without unnecessary delays. The training sequences kept me invested because every failure carried consequences—death wasn’t a threat, it was a reality. The stakes felt real, which made each chapter pull me forward.
Character Dynamics: The way the main leads found each other and started working together was a highlight. Meryn and Killian’s relationship built naturally, not forced by the narrative. Their dynamic felt earned rather than convenient. I also appreciated how the supporting cast had clear motivations instead of serving purely as obstacles.
How the Story Evolved: Each revelation added layers without slowing the pace. Secrets unfolded gradually, building tension toward the finale without feeling rushed. The worldbuilding revealed itself alongside Meryn’s discoveries, keeping immersion intact.
What Didn’t Work
Honestly, most of what I read worked well. There’s little I disliked about this first book. If I had to pinpoint something, some of the training montages blurred together in terms of pacing—though that might just be my personal preference for tighter scene transitions.
Final Thoughts
Personally, I loved Direbound and was fully ready to jump straight into the sequel. The setup, the characters, and the stakes all delivered exactly what I wanted from this kind of fantasy.
However, I should mention that after reading the sequel (before finishing it at the time of writing), I felt it was a bit less than I expected—not as great as I’d have liked, and it dragged in places. But that shouldn’t dissuade you from starting with Book 1. Direbound stands strong on its own, and if the second book is your entry point, I’d still recommend it despite my mixed feelings.
A solid start to the Wolf of Ruins series with strong worldbuilding and character chemistry. Book 2 may dip slightly, but this opener delivers.
